Dress Code and Discipline

DRESS CODE

With the weather changing, we wanted to send a friendly reminder about dress code. At SES, we are committed to providing a positive and respectful learning environment for all students. One important aspect of maintaining this environment is ensuring that our dress code standards are clear, fair, and consistent for all students.

We kindly ask for your support in helping our students adhere to the following guidelines:

Children should come to school in clothing that is comfortable and suitable for all school activities.  (Tennis shoes should be worn for P.E.)

 Students should not wear:

  • Spaghetti straps
  • Tutus
  • Mesh or see-through tops or bottoms
  • Cut-off or midriff tops
  • Halters
  • Bicycle shorts
  • Tights or leggings without a fingertip length top or dress.
  • Short shorts (must be mid-thigh/ shorts below fingertips when arms are down near thighs)
  • Overalls shorts (must be mid-thigh/ shorts below fingertips when arms are down near thighs and a t-shirt worn under the overalls)
  • Mini-skirts or short skirts (must be mid-thigh or below fingertips)
  • Shirts too short to cover the tops of shorts or pants when seated
  • Hats in school building (with the exception of hat days)
  • Jeans, pants, etc. hanging below waist exposing undergarments; no holes in jeans or pants
  • Cleats
  • Clothing which alludes to or portrays profanity, suggestive phrases, alcohol, or tobacco drug advertisements

Shoes with lights may be worn to school. However, lights cannot be on while in school.

Students need to dress appropriately. We require all shorts be mid-thigh or longer in length including athletic shorts. Our main concern is that students can study and learn without fear of ridicule, comments about their clothing, or embarrassment. Parents will be called if students are dressed inappropriately.

CONDUCT/DISCIPLINE

  • Fighting - Fighting will not be tolerated on campus or the school bus. Students who engage in fighting will be disciplined. Students who put others up to fight without actively being involved will also be disciplined. Consequences for fighting will be suspension from school and/or suspension from the bus.
  • Corporal Punishment Corporal punishment shall not be administered to a student when the student’s parent(s)/guardian(s) have provided a written statement to the school requesting that corporal punishment not be considered a disciplinary option for the child.
  • Suspension - Suspension is used as a disciplinary action to deter inappropriate student behavior including violation of school rules, policies, and procedures.  After the commission of the offenses, after the investigation by the principal of the circumstances surrounding the offense, and after notification to the parents/guardians the days of suspension shall be specified by the principal/designee and such days shall begin as soon as reasonably prudent.

A student who has been suspended out-of-school (OSS) for any disciplinary reason and has been assigned to OSS shall not be present on ANY school property for ANY REASON AT ANY TIME during the term of the suspension except to attend hearings.  In addition, a student who has been assigned OSS shall not participate in, or attend, any school-sponsored, extracurricular activities (on or off campus) beginning with the specific time the OSS is assigned (which may not be the time suspension actually begins) until the beginning of the calendar day following the last day of out-of-school suspension.

A student who has been suspended out-of-school (OSS) for any disciplinary reason will not be allowed to attend or participate in field learning trips due to safety concerns.

  • Behavior Documentation and Tracking Forms

At Swainsboro Elementary School we feel that one of the most important lessons a proper education should yield is discipline. We believe it is the shared responsibility of the school and home to help our students develop self-control, character, orderliness, and respect for self as well as others.

Students are expected to put forth their best effort and conduct themselves in a manner that will promote a safe, orderly learning environment at all times. Any behavior that disrupts the learning process or infringes upon the rights of others in the school will not be tolerated and may subject the student to corrective measures.

We currently use Positive Behavior Intervention Support to promote good discipline. With this approach, we strive to recognize and praise those students who are exercising self-discipline, good character, and healthy work habits. SES teachers have the PBIS Rewards app,  a behavior documentation tracking program used school-wide. With this plan, students are first given a verbal warning. If the misbehavior continues, students are given a “mark” on the tracking form and the behavior is documented in PBIS Rewards.  Parents can sign up for the PBIS Rewards app to get real-time information concerning their child.  After 4 PBIS Rewards referrals the student is sent to the office.

NOTE: Major offenses may be sent immediately to the office. ALL actions requiring administrative action will be dealt with on an individual basis. We strongly encourage you to discuss your child’s behavior on a regular basis, and to contact your child’s teacher should you have questions or concerns.

We recognize that students learn while in the classroom, not when sitting in the office, and our goal is to ensure that every student knows and follows our expectations to provide optimal learning experiences for all students.
